Carbon footprint validation for Dufaylite

Cause for change

In today’s business landscape, sustainability has become a vital differentiator. Dufaylite, a UK-based manufacturer of paper honeycomb products, have partnered with CarbonQuota to help meet their sustainability goals. This decision underscores the growing importance of sustainability in business growth, especially in industries where companies are striving to meet the increasing demand for environmentally responsible products and services.

Challenge

As a leader in sustainable material solutions, Dufaylite recognised that delivering on its “eco-innovator” promise required more than high-level claims. Its customers -brands and packaging specifiers – increasingly demanded transparent, credible and independently validated carbon data for packaging materials. Dufaylite needed a partner to support a robust full-lifecycle study, to quantify the carbon footprint of its paper-honeycomb board liners and to help convert that data into a strong commercial advantage.

Solution

CarbonQuota worked in close collaboration with Dufaylite to undertake a comprehensive cradle-to-grave lifecycle assessment (LCA) of the paper‐honeycomb board liners. This included:

Mapping raw-material extraction, manufacturing, transport, use-phase and end-of-life.

  • Applying ISO 14040/44-aligned methodology to ensure rigour and comparability.
  • Benchmarking the paper-honeycomb product against two conventional alternatives: expanded polystyrene (EPS) and lamb’s wool insulation.
  • As part of the engagement, CarbonQuota provided:
  • A detailed carbon-footprint report, enabling Dufaylite to offer transparent carbon-data to its clients.
  • Comparative carbon-savings statements usable in marketing, tender submissions and sustainability documentation.
  • Strategic insight on how to embed the carbon-data into product positioning, risk mitigation (green-claims) and customer communications.
Outcome

With CarbonQuota’s independent verification, Dufaylite now communicates clear, defensible carbon-savings for its paper-honeycomb board liners:

  • Up to 50-70% lower CO₂e compared to EPS.
  • Around 35-60% lower CO₂e compared to lamb’s wool insulation.
  • Full transparency across supply-chain phases, supporting brand – and specifier-level reporting.

This data has enabled Dufaylite to:

  • Differentiate its product in competitive bids and packaging-specifier frameworks.
  • Align with customer Net-zero strategies and regulatory drivers such as the UK Green Claims Code and EU Green Claims Directive.
  • Strengthen brand trust by offering verified, rather than generic, “low-carbon” claims.
  • Support clients in selecting lower-carbon packaging options with quantified impact.

“It is a testament to our team at Dufaylite that an independent third party has verified our efforts and shown that our paper honeycomb board liners have a lower carbon footprint than other alternatives on the market. This is only the beginning, with further improvements and wider assessments already planned.”
