CarbonQuota proud to support PrintGreen: A new chapter in sustainable print

At CarbonQuota, we’re proud to be at the forefront of sustainability in the Print industry, supporting the PrintGreen initiative an ambitious UK wide movement redefining how the print sector approaches environmental responsibility.

Launched through a collaboration between leading industry organisations – including The Strategic Mailing Partnership, MarketReach, Two Sides, BPIF, DMA, IPIA, Nutshell Creative, Webmart, Paragon and Tradeprint – PrintGreen sets out to empower brands, agencies, and media professionals with greater transparency, education and actionable data around the carbon impact of their print campaigns.

At the core of PrintGreen is a free to use carbon calculator developed by CarbonQuota, enabling users to calculate a basic carbon footprint of their print projects by entering a few key specifications such as paper type, weight, pagination, print volume, and mailing options. In return, they receive an instant, science-based carbon footprint that can help guide more sustainable choices and reduce environmental impact.

For CarbonQuota, this project is about more than just measurement it’s about educating and providing insight to drive behaviour change. PrintGreen represents a collective effort to shift perceptions and practices, making sustainability not just accessible, but standard across the print ecosystem. The initiative fosters transparency and encourages businesses of all sizes to integrate environmental considerations into every stage of the print production process.

Nathan Tiller, Co-founder of CarbonQuota comments,

As sustainability leaders in print and packaging, CarbonQuota is delighted to support the PrintGreen initiative. By providing a high level product carbon calculator,  we want to educate the industry and enable more informed and sustainable decisions.”

Importantly, PrintGreen also presents a commercial opportunity for print suppliers. By adopting the principles and tools of the initiative, suppliers can demonstrate their environmental credentials, differentiate themselves in a competitive market and align more closely with the growing sustainability goals of clients and consumers alike.

PrintGreen gives the industry a much-needed framework to act decisively, collaboratively, and with measurable results. CarbonQuota is proud to contribute our expertise to this movement and excited to see the ripple effect this initiative will have across the UK and beyond.

Success will depend on finding practical solutions that work for printers, satisfy client performance requirements, and genuinely address environmental concerns without creating new problems elsewhere in the supply chain.

The Path Forward

As regulations evolve and consumer awareness grows, the printing industry’s navigation of the PVC challenge continues to drive research into materials that could potentially deliver both performance and reduced environmental impact. The companies that successfully balance these competing demands while maintaining supply chain transparency and avoiding unsubstantiated claims will likely be better positioned in an increasingly scrutinised marketplace.

The industry faces ongoing challenges in developing materials that match PVC’s performance while addressing environmental concerns. Progress requires honest assessment of trade-offs, transparent communication about material properties and impacts, and continued investment in research and development. Success will depend on finding practical solutions that work for printers, satisfy client performance requirements, and genuinely address environmental concerns without creating new problems elsewhere in the supply chain.

Navigating the PVC Paradox: Performance vs. Sustainability in Print Materials

The printing industry finds itself caught in a complex balancing act. PVC remains the gold standard for sign and display, delivering unmatched durability and colour vibrancy that clients demand. Yet mounting environmental pressure has transformed this reliable standard-bearer into the industry's most scrutinised material, forcing manufacturers and printers to navigate increasingly complex waters between performance expectations and sustainability concerns.
